The accuracy of ICD-10-CM coding is paramount to ensure that resident’s medical records are representative of the resident; MDS assessments are accurate; Quality Measure exclusions are appropriately identified; and the principal and supporting diagnosis codes are correct on the UB-04 claim. In addition, the Patient-Driven Payment Model (PDPM), which goes into effect Oct. 1, 2019, has increased to importance of accurate ICD-10-CM diagnoses by shifting Medicare payments from therapy volume to resident characteristics.
