Q&A: How is section GG coded if a Medicare Part A resident admits and discharges before day three of the stay?

By Carol Maher, RN-BC, CPC, RAC-MT - May 14, 2018

Question: How is section GG coded if a Medicare Part A resident admits and discharges before day three of the stay? What is required if the resident discharges on the same day as admission? GG-7 and GG-23 of the RAI User’s Manual state: "Completion of the self-care items is not required if the resident has an unplanned discharge to an acute-care hospital, or if SNF PPS Part A stay is less than 3 days." The discharge self-care performance is skipped, but do we still need to code the admission self-care performance?

Answer: If you do a 5-day, the admission performance must be coded even if the stay is less than 3 days. When a resident discharges back to the hospital on the same day as SNF admission, no 5-day is required.
