Navigating the Perfect Storm: Strategies for RUG IV

We are about to experience the most significant challenge facing long-term care since OBRA ’87. Metaphorically it is the 'Perfect Storm' with health care reform, MDS 3.0 and RUG IV implementation October 2010. Quality of Care F-tag 309 (Pain)

Pain is something everybody knows about - from the tiniest baby plagued with colic to athletes, cancer victims, and the elderly with chronic problems. Everyone knows how miserable pain can be. The effects of unrelieved pain take their toll on the individual in functional decline, complications of immobility, skin breakdown, and infections. It significantly affects a person’s qualify of life as well. But, despite everything that is known about pain, studies show that it is significantly under-treated in nursing homes. As a result, surveyors are taking a closer look at pain with the new guidance to surveyors updating the Quality of Care F-tag, F309. This session will review the new guidance and explore methods for improving pain management and reducing the risk of survey deficiencies in this Quality of Care area.

Avoid Survey Deficiencies & Potential Financial Liability: Delivering Beneficiary Notice

CMS has created several types of notices that are required to be given to our resident’s at different times. Although the industry is still asking for clarification of several issues, facilities should learn what forms are currently available and their role in the beneficiary notice process.  Learners will understand the difference between the SNF ABN, Denial Letters, SNF NEMB, Generic Notices, Detailed Notices and the CMS-R-131. Participants will also understand how the Demand Bill process is reviewed during the QIS survey process.

A lot is very familiar about the final two chapters and the last appendix of the MDS 3.0 Long-Term Care Facility Resident Assessment Instrument Users Manual posted in January by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. But, compared to the MDS 2.0 version, there are some notable changes, too. This session will highlight some of the significant differences in the timing and scheduling and Care Area Assessment requirements found in the most recent version of the manual.

• List 3 changes in discharge and entry tracking requirements.
